Soluble Support Material

RepRap Blog

One of the big things that we''ve wanted to get working for a while is support material. Whilst we have a lot of the features required for this in the host software, we still havent found a suitable material. But where can we get a material that is readily available and cheap ?

Additive Manufacturing Roadmap

Wohlers Talk

Another is an event titled Roadmap for Additive Manufacturing (RAM) Workshop, held in March 2009 in Washington, DC. The complete 2009roadmap document is available here. The National Center for Manufacturing Sciences led the development of a roadmap for the additive manufacturing (AM) industry in 1998. The effort was supported by many industrial, government, and academic organizations in the U.S. and it led to a report titled The Road to Manufacturing.

Shapeways Shops, a service that became available in January 2009, allows artists, designers, or anyone to set up their own storefront to sell AM-produced products to the public. The cost of larger parts rise according to the amount of material used to make them. A new type of additive manufacturing (AM) service provider is targeting consumers. One of the best examples is Netherlands-based Shapeways, a company that is a part of the Philips Electronics incubator program.

Open-source 3D Printers

The machine uses an x-y motion system to deposit materials through a syringe layer by layer. The system enables the use of many types of materials, ranging from chocolate and cake icing to plastics and living cells. A lot has been published about the makeup the systems, so researchers and others can easily try new materials and apply the machines to a wide range of new and interesting applications.

Industry Standards

Wohlers Talk

Today, each organization must deal with these issues on their own as they attempt to force fit a wide range of prototyping machines and materials into manufacturing environments. Those present at the meeting formed five subcommittees, each of which concentrate on terminology, testing, processes, materials, and design (including file formats). Creating standard methods of testing and comparing additive systems and materials is arguably the most important activity of this effort.

Time for a new extruder controller

You trap the board between two L-shaped pieces of PCB material stuck to a flat surface with some masking tape. Having decided to switch to stepper drive for my extruder I needed to make a new extruder controller for HydraRaptor, the previous one has served me well for two years.

Copper Plating Wire Glue

RepRap Blog

It seemed to work (see pic below), although its not as clean as I would like, but a support material extruder would help with this enormously. I suggested previously that it might be possible to create PCB''s by copper plating wire glue to create a low resistance section of track.

Revisiting HDPE

RepRap Blog

This material is about a quarter of an inch thick, typically and consists of plastic foam sandwiched between two sheets of plastic coated paper. Unfortunately, however, this material tended to perish when exposed to the hot extruder head of Tommelise 1.0.

HydraRaptor's second child

I made some of the bearings in HDPE as that should be a better bearing material than ABS, lower friction and longer lasting. Back in March I had a visit from Marcin Jakubowski , the founder of Open Source Ecology.

Standup for your freedom…

It is actually just floor insulating material… The parts. I finally got feed up with having my FreeRunner laying flat on the table. So I decided that it was time to construct a stand for it. I had some 3mm extruded polystyrene laying around (which I use for building model R/C planes).

After that, Adrian kindly offered me the opportunity to do a PhD on RepRap , specifically I''ll be investigating the use of multiple materials, so you''ll be seeing my face around here for a few years. A potential material for this could be Sodium Acetate, commonly known as hot ice.

Hacking with Erik

He has discovered that PLA is soluble in caustic soda, so potentially could be used as soluble support material for ABS. Erik de Bruijn (RepRap evangelist) is in the UK at the moment visiting Salford and Nottingham universities to spread the word. Yesterday he came here to see HydraRaptor.

Black and blue

I got some of the 3M blue masking tape that Vik Olliver recommended as a bed material for PLA. That small amount of material was enough to turn the first few layers of my object dark grey. If it happens too much the object has material missing.

Giving Mendel Teeth

RepRap Blog

Incidentally, when reprapping something like this with a low cross-sectional area there can be problems with each layer of the part getting too much material deposited on it if you use the same reprapping settings as for larger parts.

More PLAying

The first bed material I used was balsa wood. Way back in April last year I tested a sample of PLA and got as far as making a test block with it and establishing that the warping was much less than the other plastics and you don''t need a raft.

Skeinforge Support

RepRap Blog

I''ve been trying out the support material in Skeinforge and said I''d post some pictures. The settings have not been fine tuned but I''m still very pleased with the results.

Wire nozzle

RepRap Blog

By wrapping the wire around a former, then setting it in an insulating material the wire creates the working profile for the nozzle: Here JB Weld acts as the insulator. Since Zachs idea of using a stepper shaft to drive the extruder, the designs got a lot simpler.

Material Diameter Temperature Nozzle Weight Flow rate HDPE 3.1 Rheology is the study of the flow of matter and that is what I have mainly been doing for the past few weeks.

Support for overhangs

RepRap Blog

The program allows you to specify a support material for each material in the RepRap machine by name. The latest Java host program in the repository now contains code to compute the support needed for overhangs automatically.

New year, new extruder?

The RepRap design has always aimed to be cheap and easy to make from readily available materials. With that in mind I set about trying to design a reliable extruder that I can make with the tools and materials I have available.

Bugs Brew PLA Direct

RepRap Blog

A team from South Koreas KAIST University and the chemical company LG Chem, have developed a one-stage process which produces our favourite fabrication material, polylactic acid, and its copolymers through direct fermentation of starch. They''ve genetically engineered E.coli to do the job, which makes the production of PLA cheaper and more "commercially viable."

No-Lathe Extruder Pops Out

RepRap Blog

This combined with the extra material called for in the form of silicone tube is bringing me back closer to Forrest''s and Nophead''s extruder designs with long, thin-walled barrels and some form of heat-sink near the inlet. I''m having difficulty stopping the barrel of the no-lathe extruder popping out. As the silicone warms up it seems to lose its grip on the barrel and the latter slowly slips out of the silicone/MDF clamp.

Additive manufacturing turns design efficiency on its head

Leslie's Blog

But the sobering reality is that no matter how perfectly manufacturing steps are followed cost is always being designed into the part—every pocket cut, every hole drilled comes with a price in material waste, cutter wear, and machine time. With 3D printing, engineers can design cost out of a part when adding features while eliminating extraneous material and additional assembly steps. Design cost out by increasing part complexity.
