Cameron on TED

Wohlers Talk

This came after hearing him speak at SolidWorks World 2010 and later talking with him in early February. Of course, I did not tell him that, but I did congratulate him on the success of the film. Ive been impressed by the caliber of speakers and quality of information presented at TED.com. I know little about the organization, but have learned that the 15-20 minutes presentations are well worth my time. Ive become an admirer of James Cameron.

RepRap repraps RepRap electronics

RepRap Blog

This includes, of course, making its own circuitry. Several people are starting to work on having RepRap make electronics. For example, I''m pleased to say that this blog post itself is rather eclipsed by Johnny Russell''s beautifully neat Arduino Mega Shield made in a RepRap here.

Of course I was planning to put some safeguards in the firmware and also run the machine from an SD card, but have never quite got round to it as I have been printing virtually non-stop for months.

Hot bed

HydraRaptor

Of course mains on a moving table is not the safest design. Making a heated bed to combat warping has been on my "to do" list for a long time. In fact I ordered the materials more than a year ago. My plan was to use an aluminium plate with many small power resistors screwed on the back.

I could prod about in the printer with a scope, of course, but it would be nice to have something authoritative. A while ago Amberish Jaipuria did some preliminary RepRap experiments with inkjets - details are here. And before he left, Ed was always saying, "I think inkjet is the way to go."

I have an earth connection of course. As my MK3 heated bed on HydraRaptor has been working well I decided to scale it up for Mendel.

Monthly maintenance

HydraRaptor

Of course running a machine 24/7 is not what most users will do, so it will take many months of normal use before these types of fault manifest. So, after just over a month more of continuous use of my Mendel, I noticed the filament not spanning gaps well. It had also gone curly again.

Bleading edge the freesmartphone killer?

Talpadk's Blog

And of course there is also. Photo courtesy Photos8.com. Ok, maybe not the killer but then at least the delayer. But it did get your attention right? As usual I am struggling just to get the phone working as a receiver of SMS messages.

Rebore

HydraRaptor

It also warms up faster of course, both due to less heat being lost and also less thermal mass. My Mendel has been very reliable and consistent running virtually 24/7, but about a week ago, after putting on a new reel of plastic things started to go wrong.

Where it all began.

Heated bed MK3

They are also lower profile of course. My first heated bed worked OK but it was slow to warm up and hard to remove objects. The second one was only ever intended for experimenting with vacuums and magnets but I ended up printing most of my Mendel on it.

Full Colour RepRap?

RepRap Blog

The trick, of course, will be to have the fine nozzle as short as possible, and the mixing happening at the last moment in it. This is an idea that Erik, Batist and I had at FOSDEM.

PMMA on PI

HydraRaptor

It would be a bit wasteful of plastic of course but it could be made from a cheap paste if we had a second head. Previously I described how I made some lamp shade clips for some friends from PMMA (Acrylic). Unfortunately the clips got lost in the post so I had to run off some more.

Extruder broke already

HydraRaptor

I would need a working extruder to make the new bracket of course, so I decided to bodge the existing design. Well my best attempt at making a reliable extruder again resulted in one that only lasted a few weeks!

Golden wonder

HydraRaptor

Of course there are the tape join marks. My first attempt at extruding ABS onto hot Kapton had " all the stops pulled out " to make it stick, i.e. 120°C bed, nozzle height 0.1mm too low, very slow outline and infill on the first layer (4mm/s).
