Prepping Students for the Future with 3D Printing Skills

3D Systems

For some this may seem a risky choice, but Ben had nothing to fear because he knew he was uniquely equipped with an employable skill set, thanks to a summer and after-school program his teachers Jeff Epps and Chad Osborne created in 2009 to bring 3D literacy into K-12 education. Jeff and Chad made the program open to students of all age and experience levels, and in 2010, they partnered with 3D Systems to expand the scope of their offerings.

Adding to Custom Property List

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. Custom properties inside SOLIDWORKS are a great way to automate properties between parts/assemblies and drawings. There is an automatic list of properties to choose from, but there are custom properties that might not be in the list. . There are two ways to add additional properties for use. You can click on the blank field at the top of the drop-down and type in whatever name you want. This is good for properties that are used occasionally or only once.

Create Solids Quicker Than Ever

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. . . . One of the many enhancements in SolidWorks 2016 is a new way to convert surfaces to solids even quicker than before. Previously, once multiple surfaces were trimmed together, a “Thicken” command was required to convert the remaining surface to a solid. That second step has been eliminated. We start with a complete group of surfaces. Once they have been created, the "Trim Surfaces" command should be used.

Configuring Sounds in SolidWorks

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. When you are working at a computer all day long; sounds, especially repetitive sounds can get annoying. I’m sure we’ve all heard the different beeps that SOLIDWORKS does to notify us of issues. If you are like me and like to listen to music, turning the sound off is going too far. Is it possible to remove or change the sounds? Luckily for us, there is a way! The pictures were taken using SOLIDWORKS 2016, but everything is the same in earlier versions.

Why Do I Have Multiple Service Packs of the Same SOLIDWORKS Version in My Program List?

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. A fairly common issue that I have seen both during support calls and on my own computer is having multiple service packs of the same SOLIDWORKS version installed on my computer. This is caused by a mismatch in installed features. If you uninstall the previous service packs, you will also uninstall the bulk of the SOLIDWORKS installation. To prevent lengthy and multiple uninstalls and reinstalls, here is how you can fix it.

SOLIDWORKS 2016 What’s New – eDrawings – #SW2016

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. Technical communication is vital these days. SOLIDWORKS recognizes that it is not feasible to install the software on all computers. To get around this and still enable full technical communication, enhancements of SOLIDWORKS 2016 include new features of eDrawings. Two of these new features are the ability to see weld beads and see 3D views and annotation views of assemblies. Previously, you could see weld callouts but not the welds themselves.

Common Mistake in Exporting Flow Results to Simulation Studies

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. When my grandparents moved to Idaho, they decided to build a privacy fence. My grandfather had heard that there were wind gusts up to 80 mph during the summer and with his background in Flow Dynamics optimized the gap distance between slats so that the fence would never blow over. I decided to recreate this scenario in SOLIDWORKS.

Highlighted Cursor for SOLIDWORKS Presentations

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. Something I’ve noticed when using SOLIDWORKS in front of people whether it be during a demo, a training class, or a SOLIDWORKS presentation is that the mouse can be hard to see as it moves across the screen. While Windows does allow for changing the cursor slightly in size and color, it may still be hard to see. A free program called RealWorld Cursor Editor can help you create custom cursors. This can be downloaded from a variety of locations including cnet.com.

SOLIDWORKS 2015 What’s New – Simulation: Load Contact Manager #sw2015

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional. When running simulations a Design Study can save a lot of time to find the best design. In SOLIDWORKS 2015 we now have the Load Contact Manager. Customizing the context sensitive toolbars

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. One of the common types of enhancements that SolidWorks likes to create involves minimizing mouse movement. Carpal tunnel is a common occurrence for those that continuously use a computer and as such, SolidWorks finds more and more ways to minimize the risk of getting carpal tunnel. SolidWorks 2015 brings us one more way to avoid unnecessary mouse travel. Most SolidWorks users should be familiar with the context sensitive toolbar as shown below.

Precise Placement of Forces and Fixtures

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. When working with SOLIDWORKS Simulation, exact positioning of fixtures and external loads is very important. Occasionally they are placed on entire faces such as pictured below. This however, is seldom the case. It is much more likely that the fixtures or external loads be placed on only a small portion of the face. This can be accomplished by using split lines. Split lines divide a face into multiple faces.

SOLIDWORKS 2015 What’s New – Drawing: Zoom to Sheet #sw2015

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional. When working with Drawings, especially when using the “Auto-start projected view” in the View Palette, it can be very easy drop a view outside the drawing sheet. I have also seen some people will place all of their views on the first sheet, positioning the views that will go in further sheets outside the sheet area until they have completed the first sheet.

Chad 57

The Importance of Organization

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. For almost all users of SOLIDWORKS, organization is vital for understanding another designer’s methods. Everyone designs a little differently and what makes perfect sense to one person may seem completely crazy to another. The ability for one person to lay down a design and have another person pick it up and be able to immediately begin working from where the first person left off can be invaluable. A good example of a chaotic feature tree is shown below. .

Chad 57

Complex Curved Shapes Made Simple

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. There are many methods to creating objects in SOLIDWORKS. Use of loft and boundary extrusions or surfacing techniques can go a long way. Another method is using the multi-body command “Combine” that is found in the Direct Editing tab. Using regular modeling techniques, the solid shown below would be difficult. Multiple coexisting bodies can be created by unchecking the “Merge Results” box in the second extruded boss.

Chad 55

Aligned Views: Do we always want them?

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. Everyone is familiar with the standard 3 views (Front, Top, and Right) that go in most drawings. SOLIDWORKS is very good at placing the views so that they line up automatically as shown below. They are perfectly lined up with each other and the movement of the secondary views (Top and Right) depends on the position of the main view (Front). What if we did not want them to line up?

Arts can’t be spelled without “t”(echnology) and “s”(cience)

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. Last week we had students from Dayspring School of the Arts visit to learn more about 3D printers. Since the school is primarily geared towards the arts, this was a new experience for all of them. They were from different science classes and from the robotics team. We discussed a variety of printers and their uses. We discussed the printer on the International Space Station and how 3D printers could change what astronauts eat in the future.

Repairing Imported Geometry Using SolidWorks Surfacing

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. SolidWorks Surfacing. When importing non-native SOLIDWORKS files, errors in the geometry may occur. Surfacing techniques can be used to correct the file. In this case, there is a fillet that did not get extended all the way around an edge. Our first step is to use the “Delete Face” command and delete the fillets and other areas of bad geometry. Once we have done this we will create new surfaces using “Planar Surface” and “ Extruded Surface ”.

How to set Part level sketches as different layers in your Drawing

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. Recently a question was asked to myself and a coworker on how to set Part level sketches as different layers in a Drawing file in SOLIDWORKS. We took up the challenge and started working it out. When clicking on the sketch, no option is given to change the layer. That means the normal way of setting a layer is out, now it’s time to start thinking outside the box. What we did was to use the sketch tools provided in Drawings, specifically “Convert Entities.”

Advanced Helical Sweeps in SOLIDWORKS

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. Most of the time, creating a helical sweep is easy. But what if the diameter changes? Using the Helix/Spiral command allows users to create a variable pitch spiral. But what if we don’t know the different parameters of how the diameter changes? What if the path of the sweep needs to curve as well? What if the geometry the sweep goes around isn’t perfectly circular? Can we still create a smooth helical sweep? The answer is YES!! SOLIDWORKS can still create the sweep!

SOLIDWORKS 2016 What’s New – PhotoView 360 – #SW2016

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. SOLIDWORKS 2016 has made some very nice enhancements to PhotoView 360 that make it even easier to use with even more functionality. These upgrades include advanced Preview and Scene Illumination changes. We can also now include dimensions in our renderings and motion blur in video and photo renderings. Before 2016, to adjust the quality of the preview render you had to go to Options and adjust it there. Now it can be done inside the Preview window itself!

Combining Simulations Results with Renderings

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. Renderings are great for showing off your product before making a physical prototype and FEA simulations are great for understanding the stresses and deflections on your product under normal usage, but what if you could combine them? Can SOLIDWORKS do it? That would be the best of both worlds! While there is now quick way of doing this, there is a way. Follow these steps to create your simulation/render blends.

How to make your SOLIDWORKS Simulation Studies even more accurate

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. One of my favorite aspects of SOLIDWORKS is the Simulation software. Recently I have been learning more about the non-linear studies that are part of the Simulation Premium add-in. Our world is not a linear world, and because of that we need non-linear analysis to be able to predict accurately what happens in real life. When in doubt, build it stout” should be a thing of the past. .

Using SOLIDWORKS to Help in 3D Printing Thin Structures

CATI Tech Notes

Chad Whitbeck, CSWP. An obstacle we sometimes encounter when 3D printing with a polyjet printer is if the wall thickness is too small, the waterjet that cleans off the support material will also remove the main material. Sometimes this can be fixed by altering the geometry, however sometimes it can’t be. An example of this was trying to print off a Star Wars Tie Fighter. The wings blew off from the water pressure. The model cannot be altered and not be accurate.
