Multiple materials

RepRap Blog

The Java host software is now set up to handle objects made from any (reasonable) number of materials. Thus you can design something in several materials, save each as an STL, and then load them all together. extruders materials

New Materials

HydraRaptor

These are all made from different materials in order to see if small improvements could be made. Another new material I used was Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) instead of PTFE for the thermal break. HydraRaptor''s extruder suddenly stopped working in the middle of a build a few weeks ago.

Mystery material

HydraRaptor

The bed material I am using for ABS works very well but the problem is I don''t know what it is. This can be peeled off to just leave the back material so both sides of that can be used.

Medical Modeling

Wohlers Talk

Christensen said the company plans to introduce models in the future from this system using its unique multi-material characteristics. Late last week I visited Medical Modeling Inc. of Golden, Colorado. Ive been to the company a few times in the past, but this time was different. Ive always been impressed by the companys progressive thinking and dazzling projects. This time, however, I was taken to another level. There really is no other company like it. Not even close.

Home Manufacturing in the Future

Wohlers Talk

Even if a person or family owns or has access to a 3D printer, the system would probably not accommodate the type of material needed for the replacement part(s). Many years ago, at least one person predicted the use of additive fabrication (AF) to 3D print household items. If the bread toaster breaks, a new oneor part of onewould be created on the home 3D printer. The convenience and speed would make it compelling. I disagreed then and I do now.

Adam Cohen

Wohlers Talk

The copper is used as sacrificial support material that is ultimately etched away. Some of you may recognize his name. Cohen helped pioneer the additive fabrication (AF) industry. At 3D Systems, he was instrumental in the development of the SLA 250, once the most popular AF system in the world. Cohen subsequently co-founded Soligen, a Southern California company that used inkjet printing (3DP) technology from MIT to produce ceramic shells for metal castings.

Machines that Build Themselves

Wohlers Talk

As the capabilities and materials for these machines improve, expect the number of parts that they build for themselves to increase. Maybe someday, but not until systems can process a very wide range of materials, including plastics, composites, and metals. Self-replicating machines have been a topic of futurists and science fiction writers. Nanotechnology shows some promisefor nanoscale assembly, although practical applications of this may be many years into the future, if ever.

Puddle to the Metal

So here are some materials that we could use for that: [link] Note that one would also be able to cast just about all of these in a silicone mould. multiple materials

Metal 52

Mother of all Boards.

RepRap Blog

It will also have RS485 communications to allow it to control an expanding number of other PCBs, particularly for multiple extruders and hence multiple materials. Zach kindly let me have a prototype of his latest Sanguino board.

Sphere

RepRap Blog

I tried an experiment in support material. The second image shows the object after picking the support material off using my fingernail. The support material crumbled off fairly easily from the lower layers but was more difficult on the upper ones.

A day with PLA

HydraRaptor

Added to that it is probably the hardest material of the four. Adrian Bower has kindly given me a small sample of polylactic acid (PLA) filament to evaluate and some parts to make the new geared extruder are on their way.

Hot Stuff

HydraRaptor

So an interesting effect that might be exploitable for support material or aesthetic effects. When I was making the chuck grip I noticed that the raft changed colour part way across the top layer of the raft. The heater seemed to be on 100%, so it looked like the plastic was way too hot.

Multimode Host Software

This is the format that Zach proposed along with the Fab@Home guys for multiple-material builds (see [link] ). I have been working on the Java RepRap host software.

Sanguino RepRap

RepRap Blog

I want to do this so I can play with more than one extruder at once, for support material and so on. I stuck my stripboard Sanguino (red S) on my RepRap machine to see if it would fly. Getting it to start working was pretty simple - I redefined the pins in init.dist.h

Going green

HydraRaptor

It does not seem to stick to itself, or to the base material, as well as the RRRF ABS did at the same temperature. Getting a bit bored of natural ABS, which is cream coloured, I ordered some black and some green from New Image Plastics in the USA.

Arc Compensation

RepRap Blog

A few weeks ago Nophead pointed out that when the RepRap extruder moves round an arc it deposits too much material on the inside of a curve and not enough on the outside, owing to the differential in speeds caused by the slightly different radii.

RepRapped Shaft Encoder

HydraRaptor

design has one with a single opto but it needs support material and gears. Its shape really requires support material for the slots and holes but it came out fine without any. I have started making an extruder for my Darwin but I am running out of ABS.

Back to black

HydraRaptor

Dr Bowyer published a correction formula based on there being too much material on the inside of circles but I get contractions an order of magnitude greater.

The drawing below illustrates that, even for an 8mm hole, the difference between a proper circle, which would require support material, and this truncated shape is very little.

Support, who needs it?

HydraRaptor

I think the original Darwin design assumed it would have a support material extruder, so some of its parts require support material to be made. Vik Olliver and Steve DeGroof subsequently modified the parts requiring support material so that they can be made without it.

Knobs

HydraRaptor

I wanted some wingnuts to let me quickly clamp the bed material to the table and release it again. The XY table came from the US so it has 2BA, rather than metric threads, in it. That means I can''t get them locally and would have to order them.

From illusion to creation

As well as adding material you can remove it with familiar machine operations like Mill, Bore, Punch, Stamp, Section and Shell.

Unsupported!

It is surprising what can be built without support material. The structure is made up from a triangular lattice like this : - The risers only overhang 30C, so they are no problem but the horizontal beam looks like it should need support material.

Catalogue of disasters

HydraRaptor

When I can back the house stank of burning plastic and the bed corner bracket was impossible to separate from its raft, and the raft was welded onto the bed material. I also had to replace the bed material as it had a big hole in it where I broke off the corner bracket.

Stepping up production

HydraRaptor

I decided to develop peelable rafts and reusable bed material, like commercial machines have, before making any more parts. The bed material is the advertising board I used for ABS before , but this time I am using the back.

Stuck fast

HydraRaptor

In the previous article I said I could use both sides of the advertising board as bed material. Well the back of the board is a thick layer of a leathery sort of plastic, I think it may be PVC.

Bug fixing

RepRap Blog

In general these enhancements mean that you can make the boundary of an object thicker (therefore stronger) and do a sparse infill, thus both saving material and reducing build time overall. Inspired by some of Nophead''s experiments, this is a water filter insert made in RepRap.

Anti-ooze

RepRap Blog

This extra material has the potential to mess up a build, and it does my head in. Anyone who''s putting polycapralactone through their extruder will appreciate what ooze is.

Fun with Python and G code

The machine controller then reads the XML and controls the speed, temperature, fan, nozzle wiping, cooling delays, etc, according to the selected material and the machine characteristics.

ABSolution

HydraRaptor

Then I have to experiment to find a bed material it will stick to. I tried using PP and MDF as bed materials but ABS does not want to stick to them. The best material I have found for a bed is plastic laminated board. It was cheap because it was scrap advertising material.

Infill and warping

HydraRaptor

One could probably scan the shape of the base and lay down support material with the inverse curve. Now that I can create blocks with different infill densities I decided to experiment to see what effect it has on HDPE warping.

Cerastil and soap stone

HydraRaptor

It is labeled as a hazardous substance and comes with a material safety data sheet which says it can''t be disposed of in domestic waste and must not enter the sewage system.

Extruder postmortem

HydraRaptor

This is a common problem and stems from the fact that PTFE has the lowest coefficient of friction of any known solid material. So my extruder died at the beginning of the month. I have been busy with other things so I have only just got round to thinking about rebuilding it.
