The Java host software is now set up to handle objects made from any (reasonable) number of materials. Thus you can design something in several materials, save each as an STL, and then load them all together. extruders materials

These are all made from different materials in order to see if small improvements could be made. Another new material I used was Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) instead of PTFE for the thermal break. HydraRaptor''s extruder suddenly stopped working in the middle of a build a few weeks ago.

The bed material I am using for ABS works very well but the problem is I don''t know what it is. This can be peeled off to just leave the back material so both sides of that can be used.

Late last week I visited Medical Modeling Inc. of Golden, Colorado. Ive been to the company a few times in the past, but this time was different. Ive always been impressed by the companys progressive thinking and dazzling projects. This time, however, I was taken to another level. There really is no other company like it. Even if a person or family owns or has access to a 3D printer, the system would probably not accommodate the type of material needed for the replacement part(s). Many years ago, at least one person predicted the use of additive fabrication (AF) to 3D print household items. If the bread toaster breaks, a new oneor part of onewould be created on the home 3D printer. The convenience and speed would make it compelling. I disagreed then and I do now.

The copper is used as sacrificial support material that is ultimately etched away. Some of you may recognize his name. Cohen helped pioneer the additive fabrication (AF) industry. At 3D Systems, he was instrumental in the development of the SLA 250, once the most popular AF system in the world. Cohen subsequently co-founded Soligen, a Southern California company that used inkjet printing (3DP) technology from MIT to produce ceramic shells for metal castings.

As the capabilities and materials for these machines improve, expect the number of parts that they build for themselves to increase. Maybe someday, but not until systems can process a very wide range of materials, including plastics, composites, and metals. Self-replicating machines have been a topic of futurists and science fiction writers. Nanotechnology shows some promisefor nanoscale assembly, although practical applications of this may be many years into the future, if ever.

I tried an experiment in support material. The second image shows the object after picking the support material off using my fingernail. The support material crumbled off fairly easily from the lower layers but was more difficult on the upper ones.

So an interesting effect that might be exploitable for support material or aesthetic effects. When I was making the chuck grip I noticed that the raft changed colour part way across the top layer of the raft. The heater seemed to be on 100%, so it looked like the plastic was way too hot.

I want to do this so I can play with more than one extruder at once, for support material and so on. I stuck my stripboard Sanguino (red S) on my RepRap machine to see if it would fly. Getting it to start working was pretty simple - I redefined the pins in init.dist.h

It does not seem to stick to itself, or to the base material, as well as the RRRF ABS did at the same temperature. Getting a bit bored of natural ABS, which is cream coloured, I ordered some black and some green from New Image Plastics in the USA.

A few weeks ago Nophead pointed out that when the RepRap extruder moves round an arc it deposits too much material on the inside of a curve and not enough on the outside, owing to the differential in speeds caused by the slightly different radii.

I think the original Darwin design assumed it would have a support material extruder, so some of its parts require support material to be made. Vik Olliver and Steve DeGroof subsequently modified the parts requiring support material so that they can be made without it.

I wanted some wingnuts to let me quickly clamp the bed material to the table and release it again. The XY table came from the US so it has 2BA, rather than metric threads, in it. That means I can''t get them locally and would have to order them.

When I can back the house stank of burning plastic and the bed corner bracket was impossible to separate from its raft, and the raft was welded onto the bed material. I also had to replace the bed material as it had a big hole in it where I broke off the corner bracket.

Then I have to experiment to find a bed material it will stick to. I tried using PP and MDF as bed materials but ABS does not want to stick to them. The best material I have found for a bed is plastic laminated board. It was cheap because it was scrap advertising material.

This is a common problem and stems from the fact that PTFE has the lowest coefficient of friction of any known solid material. So my extruder died at the beginning of the month. I have been busy with other things so I have only just got round to thinking about rebuilding it.

It is an interesting shape and, as the sides slope at ~26°C, it can be made without support material. I fancied making a dodecahedron , an object with twelve pentagonal faces. I searched the web for a 3D model for some time but could not find one. I also searched for how to model one in CoCreate, as it wasn''t immediately obvious to me. That came up blank as well so I had to figure it out myself.
